Koi Pond

Organization or School Affiliation: Millis High School-Art Dept

Student Name: Ramsey Breslau
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: My piece is a drawing of a koi pond. I used colored pencils on charcoal paper. It’s simple but took a while because it required a lot of blending of colors. I wanted my drawing to capture the sunlight's effect on water because it makes a nice contrast in colors. It is inspired by my grandparents' koi pond in their backyard. I don’t use colored pencils much, but I really enjoyed this project.

Organization or School Affiliation: Millis High School-Art Dept

Student Name: Nora Molloy
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This painting is called “Inner Peace”. The idea for the name came to me when I was painting it and I felt a great sense of peace and present. This piece was created with oil paint using earthy tones with some reds and purple underlayers. My idea was to attempt to represent the human soul which is the glowing center of the woman. Her face is resting, representing peace and tranquility.

Texting and Driving

Organization or School Affiliation: Fontbonne Academy

Student Name: Camille Henry
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I chose to portray the issue of texting and driving, and the effects it has on the person itself as well as the people surrounding them. Texting and driving and in particular teenage texting and driving is a bad habit that has intense consequences. I hope that by making art about the bad choices people make, it can one day spread awareness.

Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This piece was inspired by my family pet. Pets are an extension of your family. They are cherished members of your household and give us unconditional love. Being a senior I know that soon I am going to not have this daily dose of love and affection. This was my way to capture that moment for when I am not there.

Student Name: Clare Duncan
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: This piece is inspired by the Sister of St. Joseph. An education is one of the most valuable tools a person can hold, and religious sisters fought for the right to one for hundreds of years. Their fearless persistence is not only the reason that so many people, specifically women, are able to obtain an education, but also the foundation of my school.

Organization or School Affiliation: Pembroke High School

Student Name: Samuel Jnobaptiste
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: 'Buggin' is a piece I created from an ink blot then transformed it into a Praying Mantis. I named it Buggin because I was surprised by how realistic the piece looked after starting the painting by experimentation and chance. I played around adding texture to both the Praying Mantis and the background. Lastly, I used micron pens to emphasize details. I'm very happy about how this piece turned out!

Michelangelo

Organization or School Affiliation: Pembroke High School

Student Name: Aylla Martins
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: This is a collage portrait project that was inspired by the artist Michelangelo. My focus in creating this project was to make value changes with small segments of paper and glue. I tried to create a realistic resemblance to Michelangelo while abstracting the background to make the piece more dynamic. Overall, I'm very happy with how the collage turned out, especially with the features in the face

Student Name: Noelle Kay
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: I created this mobile with a Koi fish theme. I used a stick that I cleaned the bark off and painted to look like bamboo. I handcrafted the 3D ceramic pieces to match my original sketch and balanced them visually to get the desired effect in the final construction. I created this piece in honor of my mom who loves koi fish and peaceful settings.

Student Name: Ivy Pongratz

Circus Seal
Circus Seal

Organization or School Affiliation: Pembroke High School

Student Name: Sophia Hall
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I sculpted a seal based off of a plushie, which helped me figure out the structural parts of the piece. The structure is made out of wire, newspaper, and tape. I added a ball onto its nose to make it more playful and intriguing. I came up with the painted design myself, not basing it off of the plushie. I made the gradient on its body more graphic than smooth to keep the piece playful throughout

Artist Statement: “Summers with Mormor” is a memoir dedicated to my Danish roots. I am a multicultural daughter who has traveled and embraced my Danish heritage just as much as my American one. Each element in this piece has its own meaning, representing a connection to my Mormor (grandmother) who has been the driving person who connects me to the European side I am so proud of.

Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Lilee Frates
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: The most hours I have spent on an artwork goes to this piece due to the number of objects and variety in texture there to show. I chose to illustrate a microwave dinner as my subject because I wanted to pinpoint a collective sense of nostalgia amongst the viewer and me, assuming I am not alone in having a hard-working parent who could fall back on microwave dinners infrequently when without time.

Organization or School Affiliation: Somerset Berkley Regional High School

Student Name: Chloe Teixeira
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: I was able to visit the Swansea Friends Meeting House that is no longer in use. Once the home of a Quaker group, the peeling paint of the walls, dust and forgotten things show the passage of time. My photograph highlights the objects that once were important in the building that are now obsolete.

Organization or School Affiliation: Somerset Berkley Regional High School

Student Name: Emily Carr
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I am drawn to the stories of fishermen and the voyages they go on in the ocean. I composed this image of the docks in Fairhaven to show the shapes of the light and clouds in the sky, the repetition of the pylons of the dock and the stillness seen in the frozen water. The black and white image represents both the beauty and challenges that are present in the life of a fisherperson.

Organization or School Affiliation: Somerset Berkley Regional High School

Student Name: Julia Colbert
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This still life tells the story of my Mom and her immigration from Brazil to the States. I included her passports, as well as her plane ticket from her travel over. There is one of her old cameras and a little figure, which is the only possession of her fathers that she still has. The placement of these objects show their importance as they lead your eye over her memories.
